Letter Opposing Proposed Compass Energy Storage Project
Dear California Energy Commissioners,
As the State Senator representing District 38, I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed siting of the Compass Energy Storage Project in San Juan Capistrano.
As a lifelong environmentalist and strong advocate for renewable, clean, and sustainable energy, I recognize the importance of building facilities like the one proposed to meet the energy needs of Californians. However, my constituents have strongly opposed this project, and I respectfully request that you take their concerns seriously. As California continues to develop sufficient battery storage sites, we must ensure that these sites are not only safe but also meet the needs of residents and provide benefits to the surrounding communities where they are located.
An overwhelming number of residents have expressed support for battery storage and clean energy through public comments and written testimony, but these residents would prefer the project be built at an alternative site. Elected leaders in San Juan Capistrano and Laguna Niguel have also identified alternative locations that are more suitable for the project. With this in mind, I encourage the Energy Commission to research these alternate sites and collaborate with community leaders and the applicant to assess the feasibility of completing the project outside of the current proposed location.
I strongly urge the California Energy Commission to reject this project application and instead prioritize ongoing collaboration with community members and business stakeholders. Together, we can find a sustainable and mutually beneficial solution that truly meets the needs of residents and aligns with California’s long-term energy goals.
Sincerely,
Senator Catherine Blakespear
38th District
