Sen. Blakespear Calls for Strong Opposition to ICE Conduct and Killings

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Catherine S. Blakespear, D-Encinitas, issued the following statement on Monday about the killing of Minneapolis resident Alex Pretti by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency:

“The killing of protester and registered nurse Alex Pretti on Saturday as he sought to aid a fellow protester, and the federal government’s misrepresentation of what happened, should horrify all Americans. If ever there were a time for Americans to speak up and demand justice and that their government be held accountable and abide by basic human rights, now is the time.

Americans have a right to gather, a right to protest, a right to speak and a right to carry a gun. None of that gives law enforcement, or ICE, the license to kill.

I am proud to stand with Senate President Pro Tem Monique Limón, Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas and fellow legislators to strongly denounce the killing of Alex Pretti, call on others to speak out about this outrage and demand action from Congress and the President to rein in the lawless operations and conduct of ICE.”

Sen. Blakespear represents Senate District 38, which covers northern San Diego County and southern Orange County. To learn more about the district and Sen. Blakespear, visit her Senate website.
