Sen. Blakespear Condemns Flag Decision by the Orange County Board of Supervisors

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Catherine Blakespear, D-Encinitas, issued the following statement regarding the decision today by the Orange County Board of Supervisors not to fly the Pride flag in the month of June over county buildings.

“The decision made by the Orange County Board of Supervisors today is aimed at the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month in a clear message of disrespect and intolerance,” Blakespear said. “As Mayor of Encinitas, I endorsed the flying of the Pride flag at City Hall because it is important for government to show it is inclusive and welcoming to all the people it serves. I am proud that Encinitas became the first city in San Diego County to do so.”

“As LGBTQ+ rights are under attack in many states, it’s more important than ever that our California communities embrace and publicly demonstrate support for the diversity of human experiences. Flying the rainbow flag in June is an important symbol of recognition and celebration that pushes back against normalizing intolerance, discrimination and violence toward members of the LGBTQ+ community.”
