Sen. Blakespear Issues Statement About Legislation to Require Oil Refinery Disclosures

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Catherine S. Blakespear, D-Encinitas, on Monday issued the following statement regarding her decision not to move forward with SB 1259, legislation that sought to require oil refineries to disclose their plans for cleaning up their sites should they close:

“I have moved SB 1259 to the inactive file because it did not have the votes to pass the Assembly. I fought hard to get this bill passed, despite strong opposition from the oil and gas industry, because I believe oil refineries should follow similar disclosure requirements about the cost of cleaning up their facilities as other sectors of the energy industry already do. 

I also believe we need to be smart and thoughtful about how we transition to clean energy and over time reduce demand on fossil fuels. I thank everyone who worked on this bill and advocated for it, and I will continue to work for a cleaner and brighter energy future for California.”
