SACRAMENTO – Sen. Catherine S. Blakespear, D-Encinitas, issued the following statement regarding Dolores Huerta:
“Rest in Power Dolores Huerta. California has lost a living legend with the passing of Dolores Huerta at age 96. Her seven decades of courage, activism, feminism and dynamism were a gift to all of us. She dedicated her considerable talents to organizing and supporting migrant farm workers, fighting for fair labor conditions and wages, and championing women’s rights. She is an inspiration to everyone who strives to bring greater social justice to our society.
“I was especially struck by Dolores Huerta’s courage to come forward earlier this year and acknowledge the sexual coercion and abuse that she, and other women, suffered from Cesar Chavez. She spoke with truth and honesty about a painful period, which undoubtedly created personal consequences for her and her family. She spoke out based on her conviction about why the record needed to be set straight, and her commitment to exposing what far too many women have suffered in order to prevent more women from being victimized.
“Her ability to connect with all people, to uplift voices that are too often marginalized and to take a stand on controversial issues despite known difficulties was her hallmark. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2012, the highest civilian honor. Dolores Huerta will forever be remembered as a force of nature, an impactful labor leader who brought dignity, fairness and a voice to farmworkers. Her passing is an immeasurable loss and her legacy endures in the many leaders inspired by her activism. ¡Sí, se puede!”
