Gather with us as we read and discuss books that impact and reflect on the California experience – past, present, and future – and how it informs the work of the State Legislature. We’re delving into a broad range of topics about our state, such as our immigration stories, the history of our development and business patterns, and water and transportation policy. And, of course, the people behind it all.
The book we’re reading now is Wild and Precious Life by Deborah Ziegler. How does one deal with a terminal life diagnosis when you are 28 years-old? This book tells the story of end-of-life decision-making in a touching memoir. Ultimately Brittany Maynard, the daughter of the author, chose to end her life peaceably when she was 29 and knew she had a terminal brain tumor. The book chronicles the twists and turns with doctors, medications, surgeries and attendant uncertainties leading to this decision. In 2014 Brittany moved to Oregon from California where the law provided for this outcome. This is a compelling story that chronicles a deep and close mother-daughter relationship as it nears a sad but powerful end.
